“Alas…”

He watched with dull eyes as he slowly began releasing his grip on the burned and blackened mirror he had held for endless millennia.  A small sad smile crinkled his angelic face as each finger slowly relaxed and the enormous mirror in it’s gold gilded circlet gradually slipped away from his hand, falling slowly into space like a small planetoid — spinning end over end.  Its glassy surface reflected a glint of dull light back with each slow rotation, but never again would it reflect The Light. Even here in eternity it seemed to take too long to reach the surface of the embryonic planet below. With a single lazy flap of his gigantic wings he turned just enough to get a better view. The blue-black surface of the planet below was illuminated by only the faint glow from the slowly rotating dust ball that would someday be its sun.

He had held up that mirror since before remembrance, reflecting the glory of the Maker. He had sung a billion praises and had danced between every star that shined, and a billion more that had come and gone.  He had watched as galaxies were spun from dust, and had borne the unquenchable light into the heart of the deepest blackness.  Atoms had been forged from the very light of that mirror; massive balls of gas had coalesced into blue-hot suns.  No part of the Maker’s creation was closed to him.

Or so he had thought…

The Maker’s words mocked his memory. “To look within the mirror only I reserve unto myself, all other things are open to you…” But he had looked one day–oh how that changed everything!  And to think it had all started only as a tiny niggling question in the back of his mind:  Why may I not?

“Why indeed!” He thundered and with that he arched his head back and gave a screech that reverberated through the molten cores of stars a thousand light years away.  Dark power sprayed out from his hands towards the falling mirror below.  He looked down at the planet with grim satisfaction as mountain sized splinters of glass briefly rose and then fell, glittering like black diamonds across the twilight of a nascent world…his prison.

Good riddance.
